 About

Since 1973, K-Bar-B Youth Home has operated as a therapeutic residential treatment facility to care for Louisiana’s at-risk youth.  Currently, we serve female foster children, ages 11-17, all of whom are in the custody of Department of Child and Family Service (DCFS).  These children are all victims of abuse, neglect, and/or dependence, so they do not come to K-Bar-B because of what they have done,  but because of what has been done to them.  It is not easy to break the cycle of abuse.  But, in an environment of unconditional love and structured support, it can happen. When you think about it, there is no more important work than giving kids back the innocent hope destroyed by abuse.   We have seen it again and again.  It’s always beautiful.

Philosophy

At K-Bar-B Youth Home, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop the innate potential that fulfills the promise of a successful life.  Everything we do reflects that belief.  Our programs and services administered by professionals, trained staff, and volunteers focus intensely on individual needs and overcomingbehavioral challenges that have developed secondary to the abuse.

Mission

The mission of K-Bar-B Youth Home is to offer a healthy environment for abused children and to enhance the capacity of these children and their families to overcome personal, social, and institutional obstacles, which prevent them from reaching their fullest potential in the community.

Vision

  • Aid in emotional healing, identify effective strategies to cope with difficult situations, and achieve personal and family goals through therapeutic services including individual, group, and family counseling.

  • Develop social skills, a sense of belonging, positive interpersonal interactions with others, and fun memorable experiences through opportunities for community integration with field trips, camp programs, recreational activities, and traditions.

  • Promote academic advancement by providing assessments, tutoring, advocacy, and support.

  • Foster a healthy work ethic and improve overall employability through volunteer and employment opportunities as well as career and vocational guidance.
  • Help develop a creative outlet and forms of expression through art instruction and activities.

  • Learn to manage personal, medical, and mental health needs as well as achieve self-reliance through independent and life skills training.

  • Achieve inner peace, personal growth, forgiveness, and healing through spiritual development opportunities.

Child Abuse

The unacceptable facts of child abuse represent a significant problem in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and across the country.  Every year, more than three million reports of child abuse, concerning five million children, are made to Child Protective Service agencies in the United States.  In addition, Louisiana has one of the highest child abuse fatality rates in the country!

To some, child abuse is one of those problems that seems too big, too bad, and too deeply embedded in society to ever be solved.  But we do not see it that way.   When a child leaves K-Bar-B stronger, healthier, and better prepared for life and its challenges, we see a future saved!
